What Song Makes You Cry?

I don't know what it says about me, but this song now brings tears to my eyes almost instantly. It didn't last year. Why is that? I never saw John Denver in concert. I never heard this song during some sad time in my life. But one evening, my fifth anniversary in Seefeld in Tirol, Austria, a ski village in the Alps, my wife and I had the best anniversary ever.

We had supper at an Italian restaurant, being in between seasons, we were practically alone. It was October 13th. We then went to find somewhere we could eat an ice cream. We were directed to a lounge/ice cream shop. The ambiance of the place reminded me of a Holiday Inn lounge roomfrom the 1970s. We sat at a small table eating our scoops of ice cream while a man stood in front of a keyboard which may have been playing guitar sounds and the song he was singing was "Country Roads" by John Denver.

He was entertaining a room full of autistic children and some paraplegic children. Most everyone was in a wheelchair. My bride Mary Ann and I smirked once in a while as we listened to a man whith a thick Austrian accent sing "Country Roads." However, the children were overjoyed with the concert or maybe it was their ice cream.

Life for us today is so much different than it was back then. Life is not good and hearing this song today brought two things to me, a wonderful memory of a time that was joyful and compared to today, totally carefree. It also brought tears to my eyes, almost instantly.

What song brings tears to your eyes? Why? Need prayers or a listening pair of eyes? Let me know.

Here's that video I spoke of in my previous post. This video shows the great work God is doing in the Bronx. He is using Jared Looney to facilitate that work with the help of many people in the community. Everyone particpates and Christ is being shared and He is changing lives.

I saw this video at ACU and tears came to immediately to my eyes. Tears appeared because THIS video is exaclty what I want to see and know can be accomplished in Dallas-Ft. Worth. This is our goal. Pray that we can find individuals and churches who would like to partner with us in seeing God's dream come true in Dallas, Ft. Worth and all cities in between.

Watch this video and be prepared to be inspired.

Summer Comes to an End....Now it's Only in the 90s

It was a very hot summer. Record setting. That was not a fun part of this summer. The most fun is our getting to meet a lot of new people and we're always happy with that. The summer recenlty ended with a fundraising trip to Abilene Christian University. It was Summit time (lectures) and that is always a great place to meet people who share our vision of establishing and growing a network of microchurches and reaching out to new people.  I sat in on a class with Kent Smith on creating small vibrant communities of faith and how to help foster their growth. He always has  the best classes at ACU's Summit. photo.JPG

We were able to meet back up with a couple who have at times met our needs financially when we've faced money troubles. They are full-time supporters and partners of Jared Looney in the Bronx, NY. Here's a picture of us with George and Bonnie. Yes, it's a blurry picture, but there we are in the booth which highlighted Jared Looney and his work in the Bronx. I gave George some time off and manned the both as George and Bonnie went to see their son speak and to have supper.

For those three hours, I talked to people who stopped by the booth. I told them about the great work God is doing in the Bronx and how he is using Jared. I also got to watch their video about their work with Christ Fellowship. It's an amazing video and I'll post it here in another blog post soon.

One of the most interesting people I've met this summer is an unchurched young man named Sonja. Not exactly sure how to spell his name, but he's from Laos. He's a former cheerleader, football player and is now a massage therapist and is training to be a Navy Seal. Talk about an interesting guy. When I spoke of our church planting, his curiosity was piqued and was very thankful for the prayers I would offer to God on his behalf. He's a regular at the McDonalds I frequent on some evenings. Please pray we cross paths more often. He and his friend were both interested in our work and both work on Sundays. They're perfect for one of our Zach's House small groups.

This summer also had us visiting our friends at the church in Norwich and on the same day I visited with Forrest, a minister in OKC and his Sunday night Bible class. We met many new people who were very happy we're here in Dallas trying to reach the unchurched in our area. We tried to encourage them that what we do can be and should be done everywhere.

Recenlty, we've been having some very large crowds at Heartland Assisted Living Center for our Heartland Church services and a special thanks goes out to Lyndal for leading while we were away. Also, the Hills Church of Christ has a group that helps out the first Sunday of each month. Thanks to Tony and the gang for their making the worship come to life with great singing. I wish we could have them with us each week.

In July, we were able to visit with some folks from the church in Julesburg, Colorado. I spoke there last November. This visit was too short and consisted of breakfast with the minister, his wife and an elder. It was a great time and we were very happy to be there. If you ever get to the northeastern corner of Colorado, stop by Julesburg and say hello to Alan Harris. He's a great guy.

Twelve hours after leaving Julesburg to drop off our son at Grandma's in Cheyenne, my step-father backed into our car. The insurance company totaled it. We had not known how we were going to pay our rent in September, but the payment we received from Farmers did the trick. Who says God doesn't provide? He even works in bad circumstances, like a totaled car. Can't wait to see how he provides for us in October. I tell you one thing, I love relying on God but it is not very good for a church planting ministry to have a church planting family who can't pay their bills. We can really use your prayers over the next few days. If you are so inclined and led by God to help with a few dollars, you can always go to our donation page. Not only will our family thank you, so will the families of those we reach out to in our local work.

Thank you very much for reading our newsletter. Not too many people click on the newsletter link I send them via email and your reading these words mean the world to me. THANK YOU!

Yours in Christ,
Brian Humek
